Decorative Wall Protector for little Squirters

Or as we call it the "Pish Wall"...
All of you mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers etc are familiar with the little boy squirting problem. Littleheart is a girl, so even though it does squirt a little, I never realised how much a little baby boy can squirt. When my nephew was born, my sister would go crazy, because whenever she would change her baby's diaper, he would squirt all over the place, especially onto the freshly painted wall! One day we were discussing the issue and thought, wouldn't it be great to have something washable to protect the wall from all the squirting....

And this is what we came up with:

A Decorative Wall Protector made out of a towel for easy washing!

What you will need:

  • A towel or terry cloth fabric (the size depends on the amount of wall you want to protect)
  • Pieces of felt fabric (you could also use knit fabric, but i would iron on fusible interfacing to it)
  • Scraps of ribbon
The Design:
Choose your design to match your nursery or wherever your changing table is. My sister received this rug from Pottery Barn so we decided to design the wall protector to match.

Draw out your design on a piece of paper. Make sure you do not have lots of very small pieces to your design, because these will be hard to sew on.

Now draw your pieces in the sizes you need them to be on the towel. If you really like your sketch you made on the small piece of paper, you could probably just enlarge the individual parts with a copy machine.

Cutting:
Cut out all the parts of your design out of different colors of felt or knit fabric.

Sewing:
Lay your towel on a flat surface and lay out all your felt pieces onto it the way you want them.
Now take a look at your design and spot the pieces that have several layers (for example, the elephant's ears are layered on top of the elefant). Take the top layer pieces off for now.

Pin the pieces that are left on the towel. Now carefully stitch around each individual piece, using matching thread. Stitch as close to the edge as possible.

Now take the top layer pieces and pin them in place. Stitch around these in the same manner. I must admit, the little tiny pieces were too hard to sew on with the machine, so I sewed these on by hand.

Now take your ribbon and cut it into 5 pieces, about 2.5 inches long. Make loops out of your 5 ribbon pieces and pin them to the top of the towel, with equal distances between them. Sew on the ribbon loops. Sew across them several times, so they are very secure. The reason I put on the loops is so that the towel can easily be taken off the wall and washed.

Your decorative wall protector for little squirters is now done. Hang it up above the changing table and enjoy!

  1. SO true, Mira!!! This made me laugh, remembering my sons and nappy change time. A great solution to the problem and looks lovely, too. Love all the details on the animals!

  2. Haha! Very cute idea! My son is actually pretty good at just squirting HIMSELF and nothing else!
